The magnificent sparkling wine Cava Codorniu owes its appearance to the enterprising Raventós family, whose history dates back to 1872. The distillery itself was founded much earlier - in 1551 in the small town of Sant Sadurní de Noia (Catalonia). The company was engaged in the production of high-quality wines, the fame of which spread throughout Spain. In 1659, Maria Anna Codorniu, the heiress of the winery and the last representative of the Codorniu clan, married Miguel Raventós, for this reason all her direct descendants already bore the surname Raventós. One of them, José Raventós, became a true legend of Spanish winemaking! At the end of the nineteenth century, he went on a trip to see the world. Returning home in high spirits, he said that he learned from the masters of Champagne how to make champagne. As a result, Raventós set himself the noble goal of giving sparkling wine to all of Spain and in 1872 he presented his first work to the public, which became the famous Cava Codorniu. At that time, the sparkling drink was still called champagne, but in order to avoid trouble with the French, it was renamed cava. So, after the release of the first batch of sparkling wine, cava Codorniu received national recognition! Already in the nineties of the nineteenth century, approximately 100,000 bottles of the drink were produced annually. Soon there was an urgent need to expand production to cover the demand for sparkling wine cava Codorniu, so the dynasty soon built a new factory. A student of the great Antonio Gaudi, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, worked on the new distillery building in the style of Catalan modernism. The Codorniu winery is surrounded by a magnificent garden, and under the bodega itself there is a five-story cellar for storing the precious Codorniu cava wines, the length of which is 26 kilometers.
